Beaujolais
Gamay, Beaujolais, France
A zero-zero bojo, as satisfying as Scooby Doo and the gang unmasking the bad guy at the end of each episode. Marine Bonnet and Pierre Cotton are organic and minimal intervention winemakers in the Brouilly region of Beaujolais. Marine is an agronomist and thanks to her, throughout their parcels in Brouilly they have replanted 500(!) trees in an effort to recreate lost habitat for animals, cooling shade & water retention. From two plots of old vines, on rich limestone clay and colluvium soil (a fancy term for soil and debris that accumulate at the base of a slope). The abundantly JuiCy gamay is whole cluster carbonically macerated to bring the fruitiness to fantastic new heights before being aged in casks for eight months to integrate and develop complexity. Cranberries and mulberries - fresh, jellied and jarred, bitter salad greens, black tea, raspberry mash, shattered window minerality & a toasted tree bark wee lil smokiness that prickles at our primal senses.
