‘Deutsch-SchĂŒtzen BlaufrĂ€nkisch’

 Eisenberg, SĂŒdburgenland, Austria

“There are things that deserve no compromises. The environment, family, friends – and BlaufrĂ€nkisch.” This is young phenom Christoph Wachter’s philosophy and it shows in his exceptional red wines, some of Austria’s very finest that we are sooooo excited to share with you for the first time. Christoph is a leading light for quality in Eisenberg, SĂŒdburgenland where vines grow on primary rock, most prized of which is green schist, known for finesse, focus and BlaufrĂ€nkisch’s most exciting soil. In Deutzch-ShĂŒtzen, green schist sits below iron rich clay and loam, creating dense, dark and spicy wines with deliciously soft tannins. Add to this Christoph’s long experience—he took over his family’s winery at just 22 in 2010—and his dedication to organic farming, biodynamic principals, and careful, low-intervention making, and you have some of the most exquisite, nuanced and distinct Austrian reds we’ve tried. 20-30% whole cluster adds structure and spice before aging in old 600 L barrels impacts delicate layers of flavour. Think violets, black fruit and clove spice with the perfect edge of well-worn saddle. If you love fancy Northern RhĂŽne wines (at double the price), prepare to be delighted. Pair with beef tangine and long conversations.
