2017 ‘Autorretrato'
Monastrell, Murcia, Spain
Beautiful, vicious & remarkably polished, this old vine Monastrell from winemaking recluse Erik Rosdahl drinks like discovering a long-lost, first edition Kafka in the attic. ‘Autorretrato’ means self-portrait, one done in wisps of haunting red fruit that obscure what is in every sense of the word, a living wine that brims with vibrancy and bristles in the glass. From extremely old, ungrafted vines, grapes undergo a 15 day maceration and three months in Erik’s ancient amphoras, followed by 12-30 months in old oak before being bottled unfined, unfiltered and without sulphur. Pinot Noir that just admitted it was bitten by a werewolf – salt-cured raspberries, sun-baked seaweed on a rock, lifted, feral acid & a wildly energetic, roiling texture with a touch of extra C02 that can be easily decanted out. Truly singular stuff.
