'Maria Gomes'

Maria Gomes & Sercialinho, Beira, Portugal

A divinely regional, aromatic Portuguese white sparkling. The Pato family has been making wine at Quinta do Ribeirinho since the 18th century. Their legacy today is held strong by Luis Pato, a key figure in the "New Portugal” movement, a passionate group of producers working to show the world Portugal offers so much more than fortified wine. FUN FACT! Luis Pato has three daughters, and one of them, Filipa, is now a well known winemaker – look out for her delicious wines on the GW shelves! A rarely seen grape in Ontario, maria gomes (or fernão pires), is a highly aromatic regional grape to Portugal's Bairrada DOC, just west of the Dao region. From 35-year-old vines on sandy soils, the richly-spiced, fruity and floral maria gomes is blended with acid-rearing yet honeyed sercialinho (15%), and sings with locality. White bark, yellow plums, slate washboard, white vermouth botanicals and bitter spices, crisp citric acidity & a “get well soon” bouquet. Enjoy with bacon wrapped scallops and an old family photo album.
