'Magma' 2021
Nerello Mascalese, Sicily, Italy
Quite possibly the grandest bottle to come from Mt. Etnaâs volcanic grips, prized and allocated around the world and available in Ontario for the very first time. Immersed in wine from a young age as the son of a wine broker in Belgium, good old Franky fell in love with great wine and winemaking early on, laying the groundwork for his grape-wielding future. From the cool Barbabecchi vineyard at 910 meters above sea level, the ungrafted nerello mascalese vines were planted around 1910, and âMagmaâ is produced from them only in GREAT vintages. Destemmed and lightly crushed, the grapes are left on skins for 50 days extracting every last shred of character. The wine then spends 18 months in tank, and another 18 months in bottle to bring the finest of finesse and peak our fascination. Kirsch, preserved plums, violet essence, liquorice whip, burnt toast bitters, smoked game meets bloody lip, chinese five spice & the Earthâs core kinda minerality. Open after building your first rotisserie spit and enjoying the smokey, self-basted fruits of your labour with many accoutrements.Â
