2018 St. Aldegunder ‘Palmberg'

Riesling, Mosel, Germany

Germany’s favourite grape, dipped in honey & wrapped in a slate bow. Dr. Ulrich ‘Ulli’ Stein is a huge advocate for the importance of passing on the care of the stunning, frighteningly steep, low-yield & slate-packed vineyards of the Mosel. FUN FACT! His label ‘mascot’ of sorts is called “die steinlaus” or “the stone louse”, a fictitious animal created by German humorist Loriot in 1976 to parody nature documentaries! ‘Palmberg’ is a spätlese (late-harvest) feinherb (an unofficial term for off-dry wine, similar to the official Halbtrocken), with 22 grams of expertly acid balanced RS (residual sugars). The world class, cool-climate riesling comes from 80+year old, ungrafted riesling vines that bring complexity, truth & wonder to our palates. FUN FACT #2! This is Stein’s equivalent of a “GG”, aka 'Grosse Gewächs’, or ‘Great Growths’, indicating that the focus of the late harvest wine is on terroir expression! Bavarian cream with melon, sage brush, white pepper pouch, a dagger of blue slate minerality, lifting a log kinda fibrous waft, flint, honey stick & pureed applesauce weight. Enjoy with cod any which way, or grilled octopus.
