‘Clair Obscur’ 2020

Chardonnay & Pinot Noir, Côte des Bar, Champagne, France

A plump, opulent and concentrated, BRAND NEW to Ontario grower champagne from GW Imports! We were stunned by the precision & FORCE of these zero-zero (or additive free!) teeny-tiny batch Champagnes, and are THRILLED to bring them to you. Patient farmers and winemakers, Salima and Alain Cordeuil’s organic four hectares are sitting pretty in the village of Noé les Mallets, in the elevated, southern Côte des Bar sub-region of Champagne. Their work is gentle, and extremely low-intervention, exploring the possibilities of regionally synonymous grapes through phenolic ripeness and extended lees aging. The stunning ‘Clair Obscur’ comes from two plots of 30 year-old vines of earthy, berried pinot noir (65%) and mineral, tart chardonnay (35%), direct pressed and aged on lees for four to five years before bottling. Rich, cacao-buttery, unsweetened white chocolate, hawthorn, graham spices, cold salted butter on hot toast, green blueberry, rocky mountain glacial runoff and the cold wet rock at the base of a waterfall, chalk, white sugar turning to caramel, lemon-lime powder, grapefruit pith bitters & super fine yet creamy bubbles that bite at you like little fish teeth. Pour alongside life changing news, decisions made or promises spoken, this one’s for commemoration.
