âSankt Laurentâ
St.Laurent, Burgenland, AustriaÂ
A refreshing, pronounced red with a reputation as one of the most beloved from this producer! Spread over 18 hectares, the Ziniel vineyards are guided by minimal intervention, leaving the ample flora and fauna to flourish alongside their crop. Winemaker Andreasâs focus rests on emphasizing individual grape character and place of origin, with a dangerously drinkable edge. From vines 7-25 years old, St. Laurent is a highly aromatic, dark-skinned grape perfect for cool climate regions, and also happens to be one of Andreasâs faves from his farm! Grown mainly on loamy-sand soil, the vines have to travel down deep to get water, which means they get lower yields, upped concentration & encouraged aromatics. A mixture of different techniques to strike the right balance, from skin contact for tannin extraction, carbonic maceration for aromatic expression, a bit of old oak for roundness & concrete to keep the true character shining through. The centre of a blackberry, underripe plum, momâs pot-roast spices, standing on a warm mossy hill at the edge of a bog earthy funk, condensed but fine grain tannins, sun through branches, herbs between lawn grass & white rock minerality. Enjoy with warm legume dishes and sitting on the same side of the table.Â
