A fruit-filled, quaffable and zero-zero Loire red from a natural wine icon. Babass and fellow natural winemaker Patrick Desplats founded Domaine des Griottes in 2000 and really kickstarted the movement towards zero-zero winemaking, solidifying their place on the employee of the month wall for all eternity. Today, Babass and his partner Agnès work roughly 4.2 hectares of cab franc, grolleau and chenin blanc vines from several sites neighbouring one another, in Rochefort-sur-Loire (located in middle-Loire). The thin skinned, often overlooked in red wine production, grolleau is hand-harvested from old-vines on schist and clay. Blueberry spritz, violet-tinged reduction, animal den in the undergrowth, figs, sour blackberry spatter, rolling in the mud, peppery umami & sweet spices. Give this rockin’ and rollin’ beauty a bit of time in bottle and open the night of that reunion tour you’ve been waiting for for most of your life.
