‘Macerado 82’

Chardonnay, Marga Marga Valley, ValparaĂso, Chile

Heads will spin at this immense and powerful skin-contact Chardonnay from two distinguished forebears of the Chilean natural wine movement, Carolina Alvarado and Arturo Herrera. Working out of the Marga Marga Valley, close to the Pacific in Central Chile, the duo draw inspiration from the old ways, pursuing old, local techniques (like aging in animal skins!) and making wine entirely without the use of electricity, machinery or sulphur. Destemmed and macerated for 82 days in Spanish tinajas (amphora) followed by 10 months in old barrel, this is pungent, tropical and high-octane like a weekend in Miami Beach – guava blossom, mango pulp, orange marmalade & pink peppercorn with the lurid, intense presence of a much darker orange wine. Serpentine and intricate, there’s nothing shy about this wine – pair with mini empanadas and late night Truth or Dare.
