'Kékfrankos'

Kékfrankos, Balaton, Hungary

A concentrated, guzzle-worthy volcanic Hungarian red. For the first time in Ontario, meet GW Imports newest producer, Grand Vin de Barnag! Young, multitalented winemaker Bence Szilågyi makes zero-zero wines in the western Hungarian village of Barnag, near Lake Balaton. From two diverse vineyards, the grapes grow on both the volcanic soils of HegyestƱ, at the edge of the Kali-Basin, and the limestone-heavy Kiråly-domb vineyard in Pécsely. The grapes see a mix of whole bunch maceration, and direct pressing, then one year ageing on the lees gathering strength. FUN FACT! One of the nine barrels was aged under flor (a thin film of yeast), adding evolving complexity and undeniable intrigue. Japanese fermented plum meets tart cherry concentrate, iron gates clasping sweet bark earthiness, a volcanic dusting & fizzling green herbs wander off in search of higher ground. Enjoy while the wee hours of the morning spread from lake to sky.
