A siren calls, do we pick up the phone or do we let it go to voicemail? California born winemaker Jon Purcell moved to Burgundy to fulfill his love of wine & desire for connection. From organic 40 year old Pinot Noir vines that live between two mineral dense plots – one at the centre of Mercurey with its red, clay soils on limestone & the second much higher up in the VallĂ©e des Vaux on granite soils. Jon conducts two weeks of semi-carbonic maceration (whole grape clusters partially fermenting within themselves for extra-juicy vibes), followed by 10 days of rest & then five days of crushing and punching down the grapes to extract tannin. Concentrated maturity and freshness, with cranberry, brushy undergrowth, touches of leather, supple and well-integrated tannins & a lengthy finish like a good-morning-stretch. Drink with Anthony Bourdain’s beef tartare while watching Parts Unknown.
