'Iris s'envole à travers le ciel'
Grenache Noir, Cinsault & Grenache Gris, Languedoc, France
A wildly rare, lean and elaborate rosé from lava-licious French soils. After moving from England (due to a bad case of the LOVE BUG) to settle in the village of Caux, Joe Jefferies has taken up some handsome vines residing on old lava flows from a long extinct volcano in the area. Planted by Joe in 2013 on the edge of a mineral-influencing basalt lava flow mixed with red clay and gravel, the vines are languedocien-gobelet trained, think a short prune that looks like a leafy vase sprouting from the soil. Luscious, savoury grenache noir (40%), combines with smokey, concentrated cinsault (40%) & nutty, citric grenache gris (20%). Everything is picked together for a six day, whole-bunch, co-maceration to encourage fluidity, and over-wintered on lees to plump and lock in aromatics. Candied flowers, green blueberry juice, blackberry cough syrup (but not sweet), chamomile sprouts in clay, underripe kadota fig, bushes & grass. Enjoy while rewatching Matilda and chowing some air popped poppin’ corn.
