‘Volante o Maleta’

Moscatel de AlejandrĂa & PaĂs, Itata Valley, Chile

A tropical, salty and delectably aromatic Chilean anomaly. Brand new-to-Ontario producer from Grapes Witch Imports, welcome the perfectly WILD La Basilona! Beginning in 2021, Alsace-born Basile l’Archimandrite’s delightful project is all about creating delicious and true-to-terroir wines from the fruit of happy n’ healthy vines in Chile’s famed Itata Valley. FUN FACT! The name is a reference to a Chilean movie titled “Taxi para 3”, in which two thieves assault a taxi driver and ask him the question: “volante o maleta?”, meaning, you stay in the car and participate in robberies, or you go in the trunk! The stunningly aromatic moscatel de Alejandría grapes were destemmed by hand, before spending two weeks macerating. After a year in tank the wine got mousy - a natural wine flaw that does resolve, but makes the wine taste like corn chips until it does - so it was passed over país skins to refresh (also providing a warm hue) – a technique Basile says works well for him! We can confirm, it has graduated from mousiness to a delicious zero zero sip! Lychee, yellow gummy bears meets watermelon airhead, spoonful of salt & a supple, silky texture mixes with stick-to-your-teeth type tannins. Enjoy while watching your favourite movie featuring a heist, burglary or extended car-chase sequence.
