‘Weiss’
Muller Thurgau & Riesling, Rheinhessen, Germany
While most of Germany continues to make incredible classic and conservative wines, there is a growing number of young producers shaking things up (much to the horror of the old guard). Joining other faves like Weingut Brand and 2Naturkinder, the young Marto Wörner burst on the scene after learning with natural wine royalty Gut Oggau and Matassa. He works his wines organically in the Rheinhessen, the largest of Germany’s 13 quality wines regions known for acid-driven and precise Muller Thurgau and Riesling. Here Marto leaves these classic grapes on their skins a touch longer for added texture and flavour. A complete non-interventionalist, this is made from native yeast with no filing and filtration and no added sulphur. The result is a wild and delicious freak, not for your mom, but for your adventurous friends shivering around a sputtering heater (lol winter patios), your March COVID romance who is now your live-in partner-in-a-sweat-suit (remember the spark u once had??) or your damn self. We first had this last spring at Gut Oggau (humble brag) and are delighted to finally have it here. Expect ginger spice, a citrus zing and a tangy tropical texture that adds freshness and structure. Pair with Thai takeout, that fish dish you keep meaning to try or an experimental film.
